One of my favourite places in Ottawa’s downtown is The Comic Book Shoppe. Not only because they are my source for the latest Walking Dead trade and bags of imported Hello Kitty strawberry marshmallows, but because they’re a fine bunch of folks. Mr. B and I like to wander down there on lazy Sundays to chat with the always friendly employees and spend more money then we should on comic books and Pocky.
So when they asked me if I would be a part of this year’s Fine Arts Gala, I was all over it. Showcasing sugar art as an actual fine art form? Sweet deal! So I got cracking on some gala-worthy superhero cupcakes…
3 X-Acto blades and a bajillion hours later, the cupcake toppers were finished.
The result of my efforts were what I think are my favourite cupcakes to date. Super colourful and really fun to make. Also, I went a little crazy-pants with the icing flavours, but they all turned out quite tasty.
I had my own big table all to myself. I spread out my cupcake tier, Geek Sweets stickers, complimentary milk and a portfolio of previously made sweets for people to flip through, and waited for the doors to open to a big pile of geekily-inclined art buyers.
See my little sheet with my name on it and everything? I’m fancy.
But before the doors opened, I managed to snap some pictures of all the different cupcake topper designs. Wanna see ’em?
Well too bad, I’ma show ’em to you anyway:
Wonder Woman, chocolate cupcake with vanilla frosting.
Robin, chocolate cupcake with cherry frosting.
Supergirl, vanilla cupcake with strawberry frosting.(Now before you go doubting my nerd cred, I’m aware Supergirl’s symbol is the same colour as Superman’s. I just really wanted to use my hot pink metallic baking cups, so I pitched cannon out the window.)
Fantastic 4, vanilla cupcake with vanilla frosting
Watchmen, chocolate cupcake with chocolate frosting
Captain America, vanilla cupcake with blue raspberry frosting
Punisher, chocolate cupcake with vanilla frosting
Spiderman, chocolate cupcake with blue raspberry frosting
Hellboy (B.P.R.D.), chocolate cupcake with chocolate frosting
Deadpool, chocolate cupcake with cherry frosting
X-Men, chocolate cupcake with chocolate frosting
Bizarro, chocolate cupcake with grape frosting
Flash, vanilla cupcake with cherry frosting
Green Lantern, chocolate cupcake with mint frosting
Batman, chocolate cupcake with lemon frosting
Superman, vanilla cupcake with blue raspberry frosting
And now for my two favourites:
Joker and Harley Quinn (!!), vanilla cupcakes with vanilla frostingI love those kooky criminal lovebirds.
I had such a great time and I can’t wait to do it again on Free Comic Book Day next year! if you live in Ottawa, stop by and say hi. I’ll be the one dressed as classic era Silk Spectre.
Oh, and I’ll also by recognizable by my GIANT TOWER OF CUPCAKES.
Thanks for the stellar event Comic Book Shoppe!
Love every one of your cupcakes and toppers, especially all the vibrant colours. You must of had a blast at this event!
<kick> ARGH!
So kicking myself for not getting to the Comic Book Shoppe to see your cupcakes on Sunday! Helping my better half promote her math school at a chess tournament got in the way…
A Superman fan, I love the bizarro and Super Girl ones most!
Dead pool!?!? Yes, that's the marvel character's name that came up in conversation over the weekend…
As always you bake up some of Ottawa's most beautiful cupcakes!

Oh my, pick me- pick me! This-McQueen shoes comfort is just what I need, help with a plan. I'm a watercolor artist and want to share my fun, fresh paintings with the world but i need some focus. I've been trying different venues and experimenting with varied products, yet I seem to be pulled in too many directions. I just know that this would be the book for me!
I LOVE these! My son is turning five and wants a superhero birthday party. I'm going to see if I can even begin to duplicate some of your toppers. 🙂
